Without iron, nothing on earth could live. No humans, no plants, nothing. Iron is the most abundant mineral on earth and is present in many of the enzymes and proteins involved in maintaining a healthy body. The body retains reused or approximately 90% of iron per day. The remaining 10% is eliminated and is that 10% must be replaced otherwise the agency runs the risk of developing iron deficiency.
Iron plays important role is to an assistant to carry oxygen. It is found in hemoglobin, a protein inside red blood cells that helps carry oxygen from the lungs to that can be carried body parts that need it. Muscles, tissues and organs all need oxygen. The immune system also needs iron. Iron helps with the process of metabolism and is crucial in the body's ability to regulate temperature.
One interesting fact about iron is that it has the ability to regulate the amount the body absorbs. When iron levels are sufficient, is not absorbed iron. And that's good, because too much can cause toxicity. When levels start to decline, the body goes into the mode of iron absorption.
Iron is present in breast milk and formula, but babies consume a much higher percentage of iron when they are breastfed. Babies who are not breastfed should be given iron-fortified formula and / or cereals or a supplement iron.
Sources of iron
Hemoglobin contains two types of iron: heme iron and nonheme iron. The main difference between the two is the absorption capacity. The body absorbs heme iron easily absorbed heme iron but is more difficult. The iron absorption rates nonheme can be improved by including meat, fish and vitamin C to the diet.
Another difference is the source of these two types of iron. The offal such as liver, heart and kidneys, and lean meat, fish, shellfish, sardines, anchovies and poultry are good sources of heme iron. Plant Sources provide much of the heme iron in the body. Good sources include spinach, oat bran, apricots, kidney beans, hazelnuts, almonds, chestnuts, of whole meal bread, eggs and soy products.
The viscera like the liver, heart, kidney and lean meat, fish, shellfish, sardines, anchovies and birds are food sources that are rich in heme iron. Plant sources provide much of the heme iron in the body. Good sources are spinach, oat bran, apricots, beans, hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, whole meal bread, eggs, soy products and fortified cereals. Many other foods have been fortified with iron and this is important because most processed foods lose their source of natural iron. Pasta, bread made with refined flour, rice white and ready to eat cereals fall into this latter category.
Women over 50 years of age and all older men need 8 mg iron / day. Any woman who has not yet entered menopause needs more than 18 mg / day, to compensate for blood lost during a woman's menstrual cycle. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should also get more iron.
Symptoms of deficiency iron
Several situations can lead to iron deficiency. In some people, their bodies are unable to absorb properly. A deficiency iron can also result in a significant loss of blood if a wound or a woman's menstrual cycle. Finally, probably the most common reason for iron deficiency is diet. Quite simply, many people do not consume adequate amounts of foods rich in iron.
One of the symptoms notable is iron deficiency anemia. Its symptoms include fatigue, reduced mental capacity, insomnia, headaches, loss of appetite and inability to maintain adequate body temperature. Iron deficiency also decreases the ability of the immune system.
